Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can lead to blindness by damaging the optic nerve.
Glaucoma results in peripheral (or side) vision loss initially, and the effect can be like looking through a tube or into a narrow tunnel. This "tunnel vision" effect makes it difficult to walk without bumping into objects that are off to the side, near the head, or at foot level.
The most common types of glaucoma often have no symptoms until irreversible damage to the eye has already occurred and vision loss has begun. That’s why glaucoma is sometimes called the “sneaky thief of sight,” and why regular screening and early detection are so important in glaucoma.
Early detection, appropriate and ongoing treatment, and the availability of specialized low vision and vision rehabilitation services can help people with glaucoma live productive and satisfying lives. Book an appointment today!
